Gua Sha also known as “scraping” is yet another ancient technique that we use at Acupuncture Center Toronto to relieve pain by briskly sliding an oiled tool across the body. The friction caused by the repetitive scraping motion flushes the tissue with fresh blood. The effect we are looking for is a temporary flushed skin appearance. It looks like a reddish/brownish rash known as petachiae and usually lasts a few days. Don’t worry though, although it may look a bit drastic , it doesn’t hurt…and it works.
Studies have proven that gua sha is effective at reducing pain and inflammation, boosts the immune system and was even found by a Harvard study to bring down liver inflammation in hepatitis B patients. In our acupuncture practice it is most commonly used to treat musculoskeletal (muscle/tendon/bone) issues.
Cupping can be included incorporated into your treatment at no extra cost.
